Basic objective of this optional module on Development is specialization and thorough consideration of the case of Sustainable Urban Development. In the context of the course the students become familiar with the principles, criteria, tools and methods for the identification / diagnosis of development problems from the perspective of environmental, social, economic and institutional urban sustainability.
Additionally the students learn about the contradictions and ambiguities of sustainability and practice interpretation and analysis of causal origins of urban sustainable development problems and utilization of conventional and innovative instruments and processes to promote sustainable urban development.
The module includes the following thematic topics: The concept of Sustainable Development and inherent contradictions and ambiguities – Economic, social, cultural, environmental and political dimensions of Sustainable Development – The concept of Ecological Footprint – UN Sustainable Development Conference of Rio, Johannesburg and Rio+20, Agenda ‘21 and the Aalborg Charter – Monitoring progress to sustainable development and relevant indices at the national, regional and local level.
Theoretical issues relevant to Urban Sustainable Development – Programmes, plans and actions toward USD (issues of equal accessibility to environmental goods and environmental justice, compact city and coping with urban sprawl, issues of sustainable consumption patterns, urban pollution, urban safety, sustainable mobility, energy saving, waste recycling, political rights and public participation in policy-making).
The tools of environmental protection – Urban governance and the endogenous character of USD – National and European policies of USD (EU initiatives Urban I and ΙΙ, UrbAct, etc) – Successful examples of USD from selected European countries (Netherlands, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Greece).
– Theoretical lectures (26 hours)
– Labs / Supervision of work seminars (13 hours)
– Oral presentation (50%), group work and written paper (50%)
