Course Description
Objectives
Students of the Department of Geography are given the opportunity to prepare a Dissertation in the last year of their studies. The title of the Dissertation is stated at the Secretariat of the Department once at specific dates. Dissertation is not compulsory. Students can replace it with four (4) additional optional modules.
The purpose of the Dissertation is to bring the students into contact with scientific research, to gain experience and skills in the management and process of geographic data in a limited time period, to familiarize themselves with the collection and evaluation of literature and other sources as well as with the methodologies of geographic research and finally to be able to write a scientific text and present the results of their study.
Content
Dissertation can be either part of geographical research projects or literature review. Students are required to prepare a written document describing all stages of the work implemented and defend this work in public in front of a three-member exam committee.
Assessment
Depending on the nature and the theme of the dissertation, the teaching structure includes: field research, laboratory work, literature search and review, independent study, writing and preparation of the final presentation. Final assessment is delivered by a three-member committee comprising members of the academic staff of the Department of the relevant scientific area, after taking into account the student’s work, attitude and punctuality throughout the implementation of the dissertation based on feedback given by the supervisor, as well as the quality of the final text produced and the presentation.
